NewsSUMMIT TO TACKLE GLOBAL TEACHER CRISISBy Rosamond Hutt, Community Newswire EDUCATION Teachers Birmingham, 05 ??? 2006 - 08:47 Teachers from some of the world's poorest countries were today preparing to speak at a Birmingham conference staged by an international development charity as part of a campaign to solve a global education crisis. Around 15 million extra teachers will be needed if the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is to meet its target of achieving education for every child in the developing world by 2015. Speakers from Mozambique, Nepal and Guyana will describe their experiences of teaching in Third World schools at the summit, which has been organised by campaign member Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) and is being held on May 10. The charity is hoping the audience of British education professionals will be inspired to back the campaign to solve the global teacher shortage. Last year the G8 group of industrialised nations pledged to provide a basic education for all children by 2015. However new research by the GCE found this would be impossible unless vast numbers of teachers are hired and trained soon. More than 100 million children still do not receive an education, and vital milestones are being missed, including getting equal numbers of boys and girls into primary school. The campaign, which has been organised by a coalition of charities including VSO, ActionAid, Oxfam and Save the Children, is urging G8 countries to close the funding gap for global primary education, estimated to be over £5 billion per year, so poor countries can start hiring teachers. Britain has already pledged £8.5 billion which will be paid over 10 years and will go towards a global target of £55.6 billion to get 100 million children in schools.
