G8 Members to Share Crime Data

The Group of Eight members agreed Friday to create databases to fight crime and exchange information on cargoes and passengers.

The agreement on the databases -- about terrorism, underage sex and illegal migration -- was reached at a two-day meeting of police and legal officials in Russia, which currently chairs the group.

"The ministers stressed that it is important not to allow a safe haven to terrorists," said Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, flanked by police and officials from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. Moscow has strongly criticized London and Washington in the past for granting asylum to Chechen separatists.

The countries also decided to exchange information and analysis on suspicious cargoes and passengers when they cross borders. U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said differences between G8 members would not stop police and legal officials from cooperating on the ground.
