Ella Pamfilova: About 500 Russian and Foreign NGOs will come to Moscow in July, on the eve of the G8 summit

Moscow, May 31, Interfax. – The representatives of Russian and international NGOs will meet in Moscow in July on the eve of the G8 summit.

According to Ella Pamfilova, the coordinator of the National working group of “Civil G8 – 2006” project, “We expect about 500 participants. Two third of this number will be represented by international and foreign NGOs”, - she said.

Ella Pamfilova also said that the Forum will elaborate recommendations which will be passed to the G8 leaders for the discussion during the summit in St Petersburg.
It is supposed that during the Forum such issues as energy security, AIDS reduction, ecology, social development, poverty reduction and social responsibility of business will be discussed.

“The most acute issue that we can not miss is the issue of human rights< - stressed Ella Pamfilova. She also said that the representatives of NGOs will discuss the issues of civil control over the law-enforcement bodies activities, human rights within the context of fighting terrorism, migration problems and the counteraction of NGOs with the state.

“We are planning to conduct an International NGOs Forum in July 3-4 to clarify NGOs positions and opinions on the priority issues, to determine most acute problems and to discuss them aiming to attract G8 leaders’ attention to them. We suppose to pass our recommendations to the presiding country and hope the majority of them will be discussed at the summit”, - she said.

The Greenpeace-Russia Director Serguei Tsyplenkov said at the press-conference, that during the July Forum NGOs will work out recommendations for G8 leaders, but there are few chances that they will be included into the summit agenda. “The agenda has been already formed and there are no chance to add something to it”, - he said.

Serguei Tsyplenkov also said that some of the recommendations will be possibly included into the 2007 summit agenda, which will be held in Germany.

”Among most acute problems I would like to stress the importance of discussing NGOs situation in Russia and USA and the issue of terrorism and human rights. Within the framework of the fight against terrorism many G8 and other leaders “forget” about human rights”, - said Serguei Tsyplenkov.

The Director of WWF-Russia Igor Chestin said it is possible that at the future G8 summits the leaders will meet the international NGO representatives.

He also said that such global NGOs as Greenpeace, WWF, “International Amnesty” confirmed their readiness to participate at G8 summits.

”There are few chances that it can be done this year, - said Igor Chestin. – But it is possible that such consultations will became part of G8 summits formal process”.

The regional Director of Toronto University G8 Research Group Victoria Panova stressed, that within the framework of Russian presidency in G8 the civil society actively participate in discussing the coming G8 summit agenda issues.

I’d like to stress the special role of the Russian civil society in the process”, - she said.
