Ella Pamfilova awarded French order The Legion of Honour
Moscow. 28th September. Interfax – The Chairman of the Civil Society Institutions and Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation Ella Pamfilova has been awarded The Legion of Honour, as French embassy in Moscow informed Interfax.
As press release of the diplomatic mission states, the order was presented to E.Pamfilova by French Ambassador in Russia Jean Cadet on behalf of President Jacques Chiraq.
“President of the Republic in this way would like to pay tribute to the work led by Ms. Pamfilova for civil society development, pay tribute from country committed to freedoms, with friendly feelings towards Russia”,- press release indicates.
“In the world of globalization human rights defense, fight for human dignity, rights and freedom of the citizens are an everyday necessity”, - Ambassador stated.
The Legion of Honour was created by Napoleon Bonaparte on 19th May 1802 to reward for civil and military accomplishments at war or peace time. Previously a number of Russian women were honoured with this reward, including Maya Plisetskaya, Galina Vishnevskaya and Lyudmila Verbitskaya.
