EEC countries agree energy strategy tasks

April 21 (Interfax) - Experts from Eurasian Economic Community (EEC) countries at a meeting on Friday agreed the technical specifications for the development of a fuel and energy complex strategy for all countries in the EEC, Anatoly Yanovsky, director of the fuel and energy complex department at the Industry and Energy Ministry, said.

"The meeting was constructive, especially noteworthy is the fact that technical specifications were agreed for the development of a fuel and energy complex strategy in all EEC countries, which will create a solid base for long-term cooperation," the Ministry quoted him as saying, in a press release.

"This is totally in line with one of the options proposed by the Russian Federation as part of its presidency of the G8, to ensure global energy security and the need to consolidate efforts both as producers and as consumers to harmonize energy strategies. It should be noted that representatives from Uzbekistan took part in the VIII session for the first time," the Industry and Energy Ministry quoted Yanovsky as saying.

The Energy Research Institute at the Academy of Science is to act as the executor of technical specifications for the implementation of scientific research work for the "preparation of a strategy for the development of fuel and energy complexes in EEC states in the period to 2020."

The press release also said that the meeting was preceded by a two- day meeting of a commission for the formation of a common energy market and a commission for problems with cooperation in the coal, oil and gas sectors, during which the main topics for discussion were drawn up.

The minutes from the meeting note that the participant countries approved a bilateral format proposed by the Industry and Energy Ministry for the joint development of oil and gas fields.

According to the Industry and Energy Ministry, participants in the meeting also discussed: a draft agreement for the development of pipeline transport in EEC countries, a joint fuel and energy balance for 2006-2008, a roadmap for cooperation between EEC states for water and energy regulating in Central Asia, development of cooperation for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and also the holding of a conference in 2006 dealing with problems for cooperation between the energy systems of EEC members.

The EEC includes Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. rd
