G8 finance ministers to focus on energy in poor countries
Developing the energy structure of poor countries will be a priority when finance ministers from industrialized nations meet in St. Petersburg in June, the Russian finance minister said Thursday.
The event will precede Russia's debut summit as the Group of Eight president in July.
"The meeting will set goals ... primarily concerning the development of the world economy, prospects for oil markets and energy security," Alexei Kudrin said. "The fight against poverty will be also considered. We will concentrate on the development of energy structures in poor countries."
He added that the meeting would also discuss measures to combat infectious diseases, particularly bird flu, terrorism financing, how to improve the management of state finances and how to make people more economically literate.
