COMPIEGNE, September 23 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has assured that Russia will fruitfully cooperate with its partners in the G8 and EU formats.
The meeting with French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Angela Merkel focused on the results of the G8 summit in St. Petersburg in the light of Germany’s upcoming presidency in the G8 in 2007, he told a news conference on Saturday.
“After Germany takes over EU presidency from Russia, we’ll continue to cooperate fruitfully, mainly in such areas of priority as energy security, education and the fight with infectious diseases,” he said.
Putin pointed out that Russia-EU stronger cooperation was high on the agenda.
“It’s evident that the creation of the four common spaces remains the unquestionable priority of Russia-EU cooperation. We hope that a deep interest in stronger Russia-EU relations shown by my French and German counterparts at this meeting will allow us to make a serious breakthrough in resolving the tasks we set,” he said.
Putin expressed the hope that Germany and then France would maintain such approach during their EU presidency.
He described cooperation with France and Germany in energy and production sector as priority. “Russia is interested in mutual cooperation and implementation of joint projects in such high-tech areas as aviation, space and modern transport infrastructure.”
“We discussed space and aviation proceeding from concrete projects. On Friday, we inked documents that will allow to translate into reality transport infrastructure projects in Russia 10 billion U.S. dollars worth. We have great plans for cooperation with Germany, mainly in machine-building industry,” Putin said.
