MOSCOW. Russia may complete accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) within two months, said Alexander Shokhin, president of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RUIE).
“The US political elite is divided over Russia’s accession to the WTO,” he said. “Some think the issue will be settled within two months, while others believe the US delegation would draw out negotiations until the G8 summit in St. Petersburg, so that Russia would not feel as a full member of the international trade community.”
Mr. Shokhin believes that “the first scenario might prevail.” The RUIE head recalled, “US President George Bush has assured Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that the issue would be resolved positively and that he was personally monitoring its progress.”I hope that “this was not a simple diplomatic statement but an honest desire to accelerate Russia’s accession to the WTO and settle the issue,” he said.
