1. 4bn pounds for schools in poorest nations


Gordon Brown said finance ministers from the Group of Seven leading economies had agreed to give more money to educate children in some of the poorest countries. Nelson Mandela, the former South African president, will announce the new measure at next month's meeting of African finance and education ministers in Mozambique which Mr Brown will also attend. The UK has pledged 1.4bn pounds for education in the poorest counteries in the three years to 2008-09.
