News8 regulatory service chiefs seek to abate energy impactBy Alexander Konovalov MOSCOW, March 23 (Itar-Tass) — The chiefs of the state-run ecological and technological security regulation services of G8 countries meet here on Thursday to begin to prepare proposals for a G8 summit, due to be held in St Petersburg in summer, on the abatement of the energy sector's impact on the environment, Alexander Khamaza, chief of the international cooperation department of the Rostekhnadzor (Federal Service for Environmental, Techological, and Nuclear Supervision), has told Itar-Tass. Khamaza said, "The Moscow meeting is called upon to work out coordinated international measures to abate the energy sector's detrimental impact on the environment". The two-day meeting will be also attended by officials of the European Union countries, the World Bank, and the International Energy Agency. The Rostekhnadzor official pointed out, "Joint documents, to be worked out at the meeting, on licensing, supervisory monitoring actions, as well as sanctions and preventive measures against offenders will be referred to the sherpas of G8 countries". Way back in February, Rostekhnadzor chief Konstantin Pulikovsky told an international conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency about proposals being prepared with a view to establishing in Russia an international center for the storage and processing of nuclear waste. |
