The NGO World Community discussed the results of “Civil g8-2006” Project

The final conference dedicated to the realization of G8-2007 summit decisions was held in Moscow, December 2. More than 80 represevtatives of international NGOs participants of the conference highly appreciated the level of the activities within the framework of Civil G8-2006 project.

According to the Chief of the Toronto University, G8 Research Group John Kirton, “this year G8 was a ninth full member of the summit and the voice of the civil society was heard”.

More than 2 thousand NGOs representing 58 countries participated in the “Civil G8-2006” project under the presidency of Russia. About 28% of all civil society recommendations were taken into consideration by the final documents of G8 Group. According to Voctoria Panova , Director of Russian project for G8 Research, the results of the research show that they had mostly declarative nature. “But we witness today a progress of wilingness to hear the voice of the world civil society”, - she stressed.

This year for the first time the desired level within the cooperation between the politicians and the civil society was finally obtained. The following fact proves that clearly: for the first time all G8 Sherpas attended the civil Forum, Russian president Putin attended the meeting of more than 700 NGOs and met the group of Global NGO representatives.

The conference participants stress that the work over the quality control of NGO recommendations would be a new serious step in their activities.

Alexander Auzan, the President of “Social contract” national project Institute said that the main results of the project activities wasn’t the level of influence on the G8 group decisions but mostly the internal consolidation of civil society institutions. “It was not easy to provide representation of different groups of the civil society and to take into account interests of both NGO activists and experts. But we managed to do it”, - he stressed.

According to the participants’ opinion, now the main aim of NGOs is to organize a permanent civil control over the summit decisions and timely preparation of NGO recommendations for future summits agenda.

According to Ella Pamfilova, the Chair of the Counsel for human rights and democratic institutions development under the President of the Russian federation, “One of the most important results of our activities is the fact that the Russian NGO community has strengthened its positions. We don’t intend to stop in the middle of our actions. And I’m sure that within the period of other countries presidency in G8 the voice of Russian NGOs will be heard”.

The 2007 G8 summit will take place in Germany. According to Regina Gunter, member of German NGO Forum for environment and development, some priority subjects to discuss have been already chosen – climate, energy, intellectual property protection and Africa.

Within the conference Russian NGOs delivered recommendations for the agenda of the future civil summit which will be held in Germany.
