Speech at 'Delivering the 2006 G8 Agenda' final international NGO conference

I’d like to add a small voice from Japan and to speak about our expectations of German G8. I think this process is most important for civil society and I guess even for the Japanese government, as well. For the civil society it is very important to show our governments the process of civil participation and it’s a little bit pity that a German Sherpa Mr Gunter has not been here but when I met him in October he said when he will send Sherpas to Japan he will not intend to meet the civil society in Japan but I think that the British government and the Russian government had meetings with the civil society in each member country. So, I’m thinking about sending a clear message to German government from Japanese NGOs and I expect German NGOs to participate in this process, too.

For the Japanese government this process is very important because for the Japanese government it’s a higher priority as to G8 member to raise the Japanese police to the international level.

It is also very important because G8 is the discussion among leaders, prime-ministers, president level, minister level. And it is a good opportunity for them to influence the prime-minister and it will be a first time for our new prime-minister Abe to participate at G8 summit so it would be a very good chance for them I mean ministers and the civil society to put the agenda into his mind. The problems of environment and global climate change are also important because from the domestic situation in Japan we will revise the way to achieve the Kyoto Protocol target in 2007. So, it is very important to revise the problem in Germany and in Japan. And we have to put it into our prime-minister mind.

And regarding the current situation in Japan as for the preparation to 2008, some Japanese NGOs as CIVICUS started the coalition of NGOs and corresponding environmental NGOs have joined the coalition and we encourage the minister of environment to finance its activities.

We hope to participate at the whole process of German G8.

Thank you.
