Russia’s G8 topics top priority for all countries - Shuvalov

MOSCOW, March 9 - Russia’s G8 topics suggested for the discussion at the G8 St. Petersburg summit in July are a top priority for all countries, Russian presidential aide Igor Shuvalov said earlier today at the Civil G8 2006 forum in Moscow.

“We believed topics put on the summit agenda have to be historically justified and be of top importance for all world countries,” he said, addressing the forum attended by G8 sherps. He highlighted energy security as an issue “important to the world as a whole.”

“Russia, with its huge energy reserves, plays an important role in providing global energy security,” the official said. “Russia is committed to contributing to everyday life solutions as well as global development,” he said.

The Russian sherp reminded that the forthcoming St. Petersburg summit would be centered around energy security, infectious diseases, and education.

“We have great legacy in fighting various infectious diseases, where we have invested heavily,” he said.

“Considering the situation with pandemics, and knowing there is a threat of avian flu spreading, we are aware of the danger posed by infectious diseases to the population of our planet,” Shuvalov said.

“Education development must ensure innovative development of our economies in the 21st century,” he added, recalling that the “Modernization of professional training has become one of priority national projects in Russia.”

Russia’s choice of priorities for its G8 Presidency is based on its experience and capabilities to contribute to relevant solutions, he said.

The three summit priorities will go hand in hand with more traditional issues like non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, international efforts against terrorism and protection of intellectual property rights.
