Round Table Discussion “Intellectual Property Protection in Russian Film Industry”

According the President of American Film Industry Association Dan Glickman, «The theft of intellectual property prevent the Russian film industry and the creative potential from getting necessary investments and maximizing its development.
The special Round table discussion on the Russian film industry problems was organized by the initiative of ICC-Russia and was held the 29th of March at US ambassador residence in Moscow. Among the participants of the discussion were the Minister of Trade and Economic development German Gref, the US Ambassador to Russia William Berns, leaders of most famous and biggest Russian TV channels and TV companies Konstantin Ernst, Igor Tolstunov, Alexander Akopov etc.

Co-chair of the Round table discussion the General Secretary of ICC-Russia Tatiana Monegen informed that in 2005 within the framework of ISS activities a project BASCAP – Business Against Counterfeit and Piracy has been launched. The biggest producing companies such as Microsoft, Nestle, Vivendi Universal, GlaxoSmithKline, Cisco Systems, General Electric, EMI Group take active part in the project implementation. The BASCAP leaders meeting will be held in Moscow on the eve of the G8 summit. For the same period several activities in Moscow and St Petersburg are planned. These activities are aimed at explaining the importance of intellectual property rights respect to the wide groups of Russian population.

The Russian Minister of Trade and Economic development German Gref informed the participants about the coming changes and reforms of the Russian legislative system which provide the wider measures of fighting the theft of intellectual property. But we admit that such activities need supporting by the Russian population that’s why the new initiatives by ICC-Russia take on special significance.

The Russian film industry workers supported the idea of toughening legislation regulating intellectual property respect and the necessity of taking large-scale measures.

Resulting the discussion the General Secretary of ICC-Russia Tatiana Monegen stressed that The ICC-Russia consider the Round table as an obvious example of the successful cooperation of Business with the governments of Russia and USA within the framework of fighting theft of intellectual property.
