G8 heeds recommendations from NGOs - Putin's human rights envoy

St Petersburg, 17 July: The G8 leaders have taken into account many of the recommendations that were prepared by non-governmental organizations for the St Petersburg summit, Ella Pamfilova, chairperson of the council for the development of civil society institutions and human rights which is functioning under the Russian Federation president, told a news conference today [17 July].

According to Pamfilova, "the climate change problem has started to be raised with more seriousness". Recommendations from NGOs concerning social integration of migrants and the fight against infectious diseases have been reflected in the summit discussions and documents.

According to Pamfilova, "the main disagreement between NGOs and the G8 is over nuclear power engineering". " NGOs are sceptical about nuclear power engineering and believe that it does not have prospects for the future," she stressed. "However, the G8 leaders took into account the position of NGOs which believe that profits earned from the sale of oil and gas should be invested in the development of alternative sources of energy, and safety issues should be approached more seriously," she said. A strong emphasis has been laid on the development of alternative sources of energy. "What has not been taken into account is expected to be prepared by us for the next summit in the form of mandates," Pamfilova said and added that representatives of 13 global NGOs had arrived in St Petersburg.
